Bullying Really Scares Meby Mikayla T., age 13
Bullying has to stop. It seems to start when you are a tween and then gets really bad when you are in middle school. In middle school, bullies call people names, push them around and push kids into lockers. I think bullying happens because people don’t understand why other people are different.
When you get to middle school, you start to talk more and not just play games and you start to figure out that people are different from you. Bullies are probably scared of people who are different and they think being a bully is cool. I think bullies have low self-esteem and they are scared that people won’t like them.
The people who are different and get bullied don’t know how to stop it. They need to know that there are people to help you if you get bullied. Bullies always threaten if you tell a grown-up that they will hurt you but that’s because they don’t want to get in trouble. If you feel scared you should always tell a grown up that you are being bullied. If you are not really scared but just annoyed, you can ignore them and they will probably stop because they are not getting attention.
The bullies should be respectful of people that are different. When a new kid in my after school program was being teased by the older kids, I told them to stop. I told them they needed to be more respectful. I thought they should get to know her and definitely stop calling her names. I also told our group counselor. Bullies need to know there are consequences if they keep bullying.
The reason why bullying needs to stop is that sometimes people who are bullied feel so bad that they kill themselves, like Phoebe Prince from South Hadley. I don’t think the bullies who were mean to her ever thought their bullying would make her kill herself. People who have never been bullied don’t know how bad it feels.
I like getting to know people who are different. I think it makes them more interesting. I wish bullies could feel the same way.

Great post, Mikayla. I think that you're right...bullies probably do have low self-esteem, and try to make other kids feel bad in order to make themselves feel better. As you pointed out, this can have tragic consequences. Good for you for sticking up for the girl in your after-school program. If all kids would act like that, and treat others the way that they would want to be treated, then bullying wouldn't be a problem. Keep being an example for everyone else.
This is wonderful! Great job Mikayla!
Very thoughtful post Mikayla. Run with your passion to stop bullying and you will be surprised just how many people's lives it touches along the way.
Thanks for your kind words!
