Thanks for swinging in! Writing with a bunch of smart young people, we blog about the monkey business of life with tweens 8-15, and love anything shiny and new. Book/movie/game reviews, shopping, nom nom snacks, OMG news and issues, pop stars, and YouTube LOLs are fair game in this jungle.

Four tips to stop a bully

Tweens are at that important time in life where they choose their behavior - and must be held accountable for it. What can you do to help stop a bully? Here are four tips:

-- Find your voice. Take a big deep breath and something loud, like “stop it" or "I'm going for help" or "knock it off" or "that's not cool."  Practice in the mirror or with a friend.
-- Walk away. Act like you do not care, even if you really do. Don't give the bully your power... even if it is upsetting you.
-- Talk to a trusted adult, even if the bullying is not against you. They may have ideas about what you can do.
-- Flock together. Sometimes a bully is deterred by taking on a group of friends. Why do you think animals travel in herds or packs (or monkey troops)?

Being bullied? Remember you are not alone and it is not your fault you are being bullied.  Don't let the bully take your power - keep doing all the things you love to do and know that there are adults who can help you.  Most of all, talk to someone you can trust about what's going on - keeping everything inside leads to negative behavior like cutting, food issues, and worse.

Hang in there - things WILL get better!
