Thanks for swinging in! Writing with a bunch of smart young people, we blog about the monkey business of life with tweens 8-15, and love anything shiny and new. Book/movie/game reviews, shopping, nom nom snacks, OMG news and issues, pop stars, and YouTube LOLs are fair game in this jungle.

You go girl: Alye Pollack, brave CT eighth grader's anti-bullying YouTube video

Far from a YouTube LOL, 13-year-old eighth grader Alye Pollack of Westport CT who has been bullied since sixth grade and is standing up for herself by making her voice heard by a powerful anti-bullying video viewed nearly 500,000 times on YouTube. Called "Words are worse than sticks and stones", the three minute video is a series of handwritten signs, pleading with viewers to think before you speak. One of her signs says, for example, "I'm in therapy/guidance more than my classes." It's true: words can really hurt.
What do YOU think? Click the comment box below to tell us about your experience with bullying, and we'll mail one randomly selected thoughtful comment a MyShinyMonkey t-shirt this Friday.
Equally impressive is the outpouring of support and respect from YouTube "video responses" - ways that others (kids and adults) can show Alye that she is beautiful and loved. View the video, then make your own video response on YouTube. Or write Alye by emailing her at wordsdohurt@gmail.com. Or visit her on Facebook at facebook.com/WRDSDOHRT.
You go, amazing Alye girl. Keep speaking up and making your voice heard - keep inspiring other kids to find the power within. Be the change.
