Thanks for swinging in! Writing with a bunch of smart young people, we blog about the monkey business of life with tweens 8-15, and love anything shiny and new. Book/movie/game reviews, shopping, nom nom snacks, OMG news and issues, pop stars, and YouTube LOLs are fair game in this jungle.

Justin Bieber records cyberbullying PSA after whipping "beliebers" into frenzy

You might remember back in 2009 when Justin Bieber, then 15, created a frenzy around his Justice store appearance at a Long Island, NY mall in the Justice store - and then had to cancel due to safety concerns and one girl hospitalized by the mad crowd. Now the verdict is in: $8000 fine and a cyberbullying PSA by the Biebs, and his manager is off the hook.

First of all, crowd psychology is a funny thing. I've worked (and played) in large stadiums and run large events, and I'm fascinated by how people - adults and kids alike - will do whatever they are told to do - or whatever "everyone else" is doing, even if they don't know all the facts.  In Justin Bieber's case, throngs of young fans were camping out inside the mall for days (really?) for a chance to see him... and then it got ugly when the rug was pulled out from under them.  He has played for enough stadium crowds to know crowd psychology... and his manager should be held responsible more than a small (relatively) fine.

Do you think Justin turned on the charm? Read this from E! Online: "Justin and his whole entourage of eight were wearing custom-made 'Free Scooter' T-shirts in support of their manager," says E! reporter Giuliana Rancic. "Bieber was in good spirits, talkative and dressed very incognito with a hoodie over his head. He was flashing that Bieber smile with those darling dimples we've all grown to love."

Yeesh. What kind of message does THAT send to tweens who cross the line? Let us know in the comments what you think.
