Thanks for swinging in! Writing with a bunch of smart young people, we blog about the monkey business of life with tweens 8-15, and love anything shiny and new. Book/movie/game reviews, shopping, nom nom snacks, OMG news and issues, pop stars, and YouTube LOLs are fair game in this jungle.

Say This, Not That

Tweens are first-class negotiators. Here are some quick tips to help you better communicate with your tween.
Homework's done, and down time is permitted. Want your tween to stop watching MTV's Skins? Close the darn window? Fetch you a pen?

Food for thought:
Don't: “Turn off that horrible show you're watching right now!"
Do: "Wouldn't you like to watch something better (NO suggestion)?"
Don't: “Close your window - are you going to pay for that heat?"
Do: “Man, it's cold outside! I think if we close your window, the heat might kick in for the whole house and we'd all be warmer."
Don't: "Do me a favor and get mommy a pen right now?"
Do say: "Hey, do you know where the pens are?"
There's no easy way to negotiate... but think about your approach first.
