Charlie as a pre-tween in London 1938. |
Charlie was:
- A dedicated father, grandfather of six great kids, faithful husband, loved brother and uncle.
- Born in Boston, but lived his childhood in London until he entered the Air Force in 1951 and then moved to the U.S. of A. as a young adult.
- A London evacuee during WWII... as a tween, living with a 'host' family and separated from his family for long stretches at a time.
- A creative writer, great storyteller, and all-around funny guy. (If you had to wear a school uniform like this one to the left, you'd develop a sense of humor too.)
- Not keen on anyone who called him "Chuck".
- Loved music and theater, singing, old films (especially war movies and Danny Kaye) and reading books of all different genres.
- Kind of a silly sort. Funny faces, funny voices, and lots of imaginary scenarios and characters were standard in our house.
- Known for pointing to coffee mugs and in his best James Cagney gangster voice, saying "Listen, you mugs..."
- Introduced us tweens to the magic of James Thurber, Monty Python, George Orwell, Charles Dickens, and even Benny Hill. Lesson: there's humor everywhere.
