Thanks for swinging in! Writing with a bunch of smart young people, we blog about the monkey business of life with tweens 8-15, and love anything shiny and new. Book/movie/game reviews, shopping, nom nom snacks, OMG news and issues, pop stars, and YouTube LOLs are fair game in this jungle.

My Shiny Sport - Lacrosse

Hi Monkeys! I've been trying a new sport. Which also ended up as my favorite sport, lacrosse. Lacrosse is a fun, active sport. On the field theres usually 16 people, 2 goalies (1 per team), 4 defense (2 per team), 4 attack (2 per team), and 6 mid-fielders (3 per team).

The game is fairly simple, the mid-fielder gets the ball in the face off, throws it to a team mate, then that team mate shots and scores. Lacrosse is now my favorite sport because of all the running and action around the field, not to mention it keeps me well in shape.

The 2013 season will be my 2nd season playing lax (lax=Lacrosse). In 2012, my first year, I was 1 of the few girls to go on the select team. There was a lot of other girls on my team that year that didn't make it, so i felt really excited that they picked me as they said, for my "amazing defense." This was a big deal for me, To be on the select team for my 1st year.

I now have been playing mostly goalie. For this season though, I have a lot of outstanding goalies on my team so i might be sticking to defense.

There are better rules that were set in place for youth 13 lax. You don't have to have 3 passes this season, you can get the ball and go right to goal. We can also nudge the girls shoulder a little bit, instead of having a "protective bubble around you."
Of course for this rule only defense can block like that. And we have to keep our sticks vertically straight up, with our hands together at the bottom of the stick. (If we don't do this it counts as an illegal check).

I also got an awesome tip from my coach, it's to learn to run backwards. When the girl tries to roll dodge off you, you go backwards and catch right up with them again. I also got an awesome lax pro rebounder to practice catching, for my birthday.

THANKS DAD! ; )
