Thanks for swinging in! Writing with a bunch of smart young people, we blog about the monkey business of life with tweens 8-15, and love anything shiny and new. Book/movie/game reviews, shopping, nom nom snacks, OMG news and issues, pop stars, and YouTube LOLs are fair game in this jungle.

Nom Nom Wednesday Review: Mio Liquid Water Enhancer

Let's put this out there: we don't like soda very much, and don't like to add sugar to our flavored water drinks. We also don't like carrying packets of flavored powder around in our purses or backpacks (ever see one of those after it broke??).  Today we are reviewing Mio, that cool looking little teardrop-shaped syrupy product you'll find at any supermarket near the Crystal Light and Kool Aid.  (Note: there's also a Mio Energy, but we don't promote energy drinks for tweens here on My Shiny Monkey, or in general.)

This is NOT an healthier option than straight water because of the chemicals and preservatives, but it is really flavorful and a great alternative to sugary sodas (53 teaspoons of sugar in a two liter!)  This product uses Sucralose, an artificial calorie-free sweetener that should be used in moderation - use a LIGHT hand with Mio and never, ever drink straight from the bottle! (Blech)

Mio is:

  • Caffeine-free
  • Calorie free per 8 fluid ounce serving
  • Carbohydrate free and considered a free exchange
  • Sugar free
  • Free of artificial flavors

Note: Mio does contain propylene glycol, a common additive found in many products, such as frostings, candies, baked goods, and frozen desserts.  It is considered by the FDA to be "generally recognized as safe" for use in foods.  Propylene glycol is a component of the flavor in MiO Liquid Water Enhancer and helps to distribute the flavor evenly throughout the product.

Price: at $3.99 a bottle, you get a lot for your money as you only need a squirt or two to flavor a glass of tap water. Add as little as you want to make your money last longer!

Flavors: comes in nine flavors. We recommend the lighter flavors, like peach, ice tea, berry pomegranate.

Reasons to like: Flavor, easy to use/bring with you, eco-friendly - fewer drink bottles to purchase, carry home and recycle. You can leave the flavors in your desk/locker and just add to tap water.

Shiny Monkey score:
Three bananas - even used lightly, the flavors are really tasty but still pretty sweet, and many of our readers will not like the preservatives and chemicals in this product.
