Thanks for swinging in! Writing with a bunch of smart young people, we blog about the monkey business of life with tweens 8-15, and love anything shiny and new. Book/movie/game reviews, shopping, nom nom snacks, OMG news and issues, pop stars, and YouTube LOLs are fair game in this jungle.

Mikayla's book review: Secret Life of Bees

One of my favorite things to do is reading, because it makes me happy when I am down and it relaxes me. When I read certain books, they remind me of my family. Sometimes the main character reminds me of myself when I was younger, and even older like I am now.

I just read "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd for summer reading for school and it reminded me of some things that happened in my life. The main character in the story is Lily Owens who is thirteen years old just like me. Lily’s father abuses her, and she is scared of him. Lily’s father is angry, because he lost his wife.

Lily’s and my life are the same in some ways. Our fathers were really mean and also our birth mothers both died when we were young. Now both Lily and I have new families who love us and take good care of us.  We both count on things that can keep us calmer and help get through our life.

Lily counted on collecting bees in a jar. She watched them fly around and was not scared of them. Unlike Lily, I am afraid of bees, but I do count on my cat, Midnight, to calm me down.

More importantly, my friends and family help me get through my life. They talk about important things to me, because they care about what happens in my life. I like telling them things, and they like when I share my problems.

One day when I was in the middle of The Secret Life of Bees, I got to a point where I just couldn’t put it down.  I read in the car and when I got home and stayed up late reading.  I was kind of sad to finish it.

I just started another book called Mountain Pose, and so far, it is a good book. I think it is better to read instead of watching television all of the time which supposedly rots your brain (at least that’s what my mom said.)

Even when I am older, I know I will always enjoy reading. I look forward to seeing what other characters are similar to me.
