Thanks for swinging in! Writing with a bunch of smart young people, we blog about the monkey business of life with tweens 8-15, and love anything shiny and new. Book/movie/game reviews, shopping, nom nom snacks, OMG news and issues, pop stars, and YouTube LOLs are fair game in this jungle.

Nom Nom Wednesday: Mott's Rocks!

For today, Liv did her first video review of Mott's Snack & Go, Mott's for Tots apple juice, and Mott's Medleys applesauce (Medleys come in delicious peach and cherry berry flavors, really sweet and fun!). We first tried these shiny new products at 77 Kids Style School in NYC, and loved them.

Of all the great Mott's products, Liv focuses on what is shiny and new: the Snack & Go pack, a squeezable fun pouch of applesauce - no spoon required, only 40 calories and no sugar added! Great for the minivan, sports snacks, classroom snacks (easy and portable), and fabulously cool.

Here's her video review... then read some snack tips from Mott's nutritionist Lisa Salinas, PhD, Rd!

Tips from Lisa for healthy snacking at school:

1. Decide what to pack. The dietary guidelines for Americans 2010 recommend making half your plate fruits & vegetables. Mott's juices and sauces count!
2. Help kids achieve their potential. Good nutrition is par tof academic success - give your kids the fuel they need, especially high-fiber and nutrient rich whole grains, fruits/veggies, and low-fat dairy.
3. Let your kids pack their own health snack - getting them involved gives them a sense of responsibility.
4. Let them snack: snacking should be driven by hunger or the need for energy for physical activity... fuel your kids!

After-school snack ideas from Lisa:  baby carrots or celery sticks with hummus; Mott's applesauce and a low-fat cheese stick; low-sodium pretzels and low fat yogurt, and homemade trail mix and Mott's Medleys applesauce in different fruit flavors.

Five bananas out of five for these healthy snacks... nom nom!
