To become a better reader, here are some great reading strategies that I've learned from my ELA teacher Mrs. Marculitis. She is dedicated teacher who is always telling me how to better understand the books I read. These are some ways to connect to your book:
- Use sticky notes to record important moments in the book.
- Stop and jot predictions, ideas, inferences, confusing words, and visual pictures in the book.
- Stop every other page and think about what you just read.
- Read the first pages of the book and count how many times you get confused to see how hard it is. Hold up one finger for each hard word, and if you get five fingers or more it's too hard for you.
- Read a book you'll enjoy - don't force yourself to read. Reading is FUN!
- Join a book club with friends or start a book club.
- Ask yourself questions about the book so you can think more. For example, ask yourself "Why is this happening? What just happened? What will happen if?"
- Challenge yourself: don't read books that are too easy.
Follow these strategies and you'll become a better reader and understand your books more.
